Flute Lessons in Houston
I am passionate about teaching flute students of all ages and levels. Private lessons are taught weekly at my home studio in the Rice Village area (77005 - near West University, Montrose, Southampton, and the Medical Center), and I generally have 20 students who study with me each year. In addition to teaching private flute lessons, I am a Teaching Artist at the High School for Performing and Visual Arts (HSPVA), Woodwind Division Head and Faculty Artist for the American Festival of the Arts (AFA) High School Summer Music Festival, and Adjunct Instructor of Flute at Lone Star College Cy Fair. Please see below for FAQs about flute lessons, and contact me if you would like to set up a trial lesson.
FAQs:
Are you taking new students? What is the process for starting lessons? Is there a commitment required?
Please contact me using the form below to inquire about availability. Students taking lessons during the school year (September-May) are expected to commit to lessons for the duration of the year. You are welcome to two trial lessons before making the commitment. This trial period allows student, parents and teacher to evaluate our working relationship.
What is your attendance policy?
Students are expected to be at their lesson every week that school is in session. I must have at least 24 hours' notice for cancellations (except in the case of illness or emergency). Lessons missed without prior notice will be charged.
How long are lessons and what is your rate?
Flute lessons are 30, 45, or 60 minutes depending on the level of the student. Please contact me for rates.
Where do you teach? Do you travel to students' homes?
All lessons are taught at my home studio in the Rice Village area (77005). I am located within 10 minutes of West University, the Medical Center, Montrose, and Upper Kirby, and 15 minutes of Bellaire and Meyerland. I do not travel to students' homes at this time.
Do you do online lessons?
If necessary, I can do hybrid lessons (a combination of in-person and online) but students are required to be in person for 50% of their lessons.
Are there performance opportunities?
All students are required to perform in the semi-annual studio recitals (optional for adult students). Additional performance and audition opportunities such as Houston Youth Symphony, summer music programs, and auditions for region and All-State are encouraged.
I am preparing for an audition or competition. Do you do coaching for flutists who are not your students?
Yes, on a case-by-case basis. Please contact me for information.
What are some of the successes of your students?
My students place every year in Texas All-State, region, and area competitions. Others audition successfully for Houston Youth Symphony, American Festival of the Arts, Interlochen Arts Camp, and HSPVA. College music school acceptances include: University of Houston, San Francisco Conservatory, Baylor University, New York University.
When did you start flute lessons and how long have you been teaching?
I started flute lessons when I was seven at the Third Street Music School Settlement in New York City. I attended LaGuardia High School for the Performing Arts, Manhattan School of Music Preparatory Division, and Juilliard Pre-College Division before moving to Cincinnati and Houston for my undergraduate and graduate degrees in flute performance. I have been teaching in Houston since 2008.
What is your teaching philosophy?
Playing a musical instrument is a holistic endeavor; I emphasize proper technique and ergonomic use of the body at all times when working with students. I believe a solid physical foundation and a deep understanding of musical concepts are necessary in order to be expressive and develop a personal voice on the flute. Students are expected to reach their musical goals through effective practice techniques, develop their ear and sense of creativity, create connections and performance opportunities in the community, and learn to teach others. I encourage students to learn about the historical and cultural context of the music they are studying and broaden their understanding of the world through their engagement with classical music. The mastery of a skill such as instrumental proficiency leads to mastery in other areas of study; students are able to apply the discipline, perseverance, time management, and interpersonal skills learned in their study of music to everything they pursue.
